About 3rd Grade New Hampshire math
New Hampshire follows the New Hampshire Model Competencies for mathematics, organized around operations, fractions, measurement, data, and geometry. In 3rd grade, students work on multiplication and division within 100, understanding fractions as numbers on a number line, measuring area and perimeter, and reading scaled graphs. NH 3rd Grade Math Topics
- Operations and Algebraic Thinking: Interpreting products and quotients of whole numbers, solving word problems using multiplication and division within 100, applying properties of operations, and identifying arithmetic patterns.
- Number and Operations in Base Ten: Using place value to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100, adding and subtracting within 1000, and multiplying one-digit numbers by multiples of 10.
- Number and Operations - Fractions: Understanding unit fractions, representing fractions on a number line, and comparing fractions by reasoning about their size.
- Measurement and Data: Telling time to the nearest minute, measuring liquid volumes and masses, drawing scaled graphs, generating measurement data, and understanding area concepts including relating area to multiplication.
- Geometry: Recognizing shared attributes of shape categories and partitioning shapes into equal parts expressed as unit fractions.
