Nebraska Kindergarten Math: What Students Learn

Nebraska Kindergarten math introduces the foundational skills students will build on through their entire school career. Aligned to the Nebraska Mathematics Standards, Kindergarten covers five major areas: counting and cardinality, operations and algebraic thinking, number and operations in base ten, measurement and data, and geometry.

Counting and Number Sense

Kindergarten students learn to count to 100 by ones and tens, count forward from any given number, and write numbers from 0 to 20. They connect counting to cardinality — understanding that the last number counted tells how many objects are in a group. Students also compare groups of objects and written numerals to determine which is greater, less than, or equal.

Addition and Subtraction

Early operations are taught using objects, fingers, drawings, and verbal explanations. Students solve addition and subtraction word problems within 10, decompose numbers into pairs, and find the number that makes 10 when added to a given number. By the end of Kindergarten, students fluently add and subtract within 5.

Base Ten Understanding

Students compose and decompose numbers 11 through 19 into ten ones and some additional ones, building the foundation for place value understanding in later grades.

Measurement and Data

Kindergarteners describe measurable attributes like length and weight, directly compare two objects using a shared attribute, and classify objects into categories by sorting and counting.

Geometry

Students identify and name two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, describe their positions, and analyze their similarities and differences. They also build and draw shapes and compose simple shapes to form larger ones.
