North Carolina 3rd Grade Science Standards
North Carolina 3rd grade science is guided by the North Carolina Essential Standards for Science. These standards organize learning into three main strands: life science, earth science, and physical science. Students in 3rd grade are expected to observe, question, and investigate the natural world around them.
Life Science in 3rd Grade
Students learn how living things depend on each other and their environment. Topics include ecosystems, food chains, and how animals and plants adapt to survive. Understanding these relationships builds a foundation for more advanced biology in later grades.
Earth Science in 3rd Grade
3rd graders explore weather patterns, climate, and how water moves through the environment. They learn to observe and record weather data and understand how Earth's systems interact. This prepares students for deeper earth science study in 4th and 5th grade.
Physical Science in 3rd Grade
Students investigate forces, motion, and the properties of matter. They explore how objects move, what causes them to speed up or slow down, and how different materials behave. These hands-on concepts introduce core ideas in physics.
