Mississippi 3rd Grade Math Topics

3rd grade math in Mississippi covers a wide range of foundational skills. Students move from basic addition and subtraction into multiplication, division, and an introduction to fractions. All topics below align to the MS College Career Ready Standards and are covered in StudyPug with video lessons and practice problems.

Multiplication and Division

A major focus of 3rd grade math is understanding multiplication and division. Mississippi students learn to interpret products of whole numbers, use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems, and apply properties of operations as strategies. They also practice fluently multiplying and dividing within 100 — a key skill tested on the MAAP assessment.

  • Interpret products and quotients of whole numbers
  • Solve word problems using multiplication and division
  • Apply commutative, associative, and distributive properties
  • Fluently multiply and divide within 100

Fractions

Mississippi 3rd graders begin working with fractions as numbers. Students learn to understand a fraction as one part of a whole partitioned into equal parts, represent fractions on a number line, and compare fractions by reasoning about their size.

  • Understand fractions as parts of a whole
  • Place fractions on a number line diagram
  • Explain equivalence of fractions in special cases
  • Compare fractions using reasoning about size

Place Value and Operations

Students build on their understanding of place value to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100, add and subtract within 1,000 using strategies based on place value, and multiply one-digit numbers by multiples of 10.

Measurement and Data

3rd grade math also introduces measurement skills. Mississippi students learn to tell time to the nearest minute, measure liquid volumes and masses, draw scaled picture graphs and bar graphs, and generate measurement data using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch.

Geometry and Area

Students recognize area as an attribute of plane figures, measure areas by counting unit squares, and relate area to multiplication and addition. They also solve problems involving perimeters of polygons and identify shared attributes of shapes in different categories.

StudyPug covers all of these topics with video lessons and practice problems aligned to Mississippi's MS College Career Ready Standards. Whether your child needs help with a specific homework problem or wants to prepare for the MAAP test, every topic is one click away.
