2nd Grade Math Topics in Missouri

Missouri 2nd grade math covers a wide range of foundational skills that prepare students for more advanced math in later grades. Topics are aligned to Missouri Learning Standards Math and include number sense, operations, measurement, and geometry.

Addition and Subtraction

Students learn to fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies, and extend that skill to solving one- and two-step word problems using addition and subtraction within 100. They also practice adding up to four two-digit numbers and working with numbers up to 1000 using concrete models and drawings.

Place Value

Understanding place value is a major focus in 2nd grade. Missouri students learn that three-digit numbers represent hundreds, tens, and ones. They read and write numbers to 1000 in base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form, and compare three-digit numbers using greater than, less than, and equal to.

Measurement and Data

2nd graders measure lengths using appropriate tools, estimate lengths in inches, feet, centimeters, and meters, and solve word problems involving length. They also tell time to the nearest five minutes and solve problems involving coins and dollar bills. Data skills include drawing picture graphs and bar graphs with up to four categories.

Geometry

Students recognize and draw shapes with specific attributes, partition rectangles into rows and columns of equal squares, and divide circles and rectangles into equal shares — halves, thirds, and fourths.

  • Fluent addition and subtraction within 100
  • Place value understanding up to 1000
  • Measurement with standard units
  • Telling time and counting money
  • Basic geometry and equal shares
