About Grade 2 Minnesota math
Minnesota follows the Minnesota Academic Standards for mathematics, organized around number sense, operations, measurement, data, and geometry. In Grade 2, students build fluency with addition and subtraction within 100, extend place value understanding to three-digit numbers, measure lengths with appropriate tools, tell time, work with money, read graphs, and explore shapes and fractions. - Operations and Algebraic Thinking: Addition and subtraction within 100, one- and two-step word problems, mental strategies within 20, odd and even numbers, and rectangular arrays.
- Number and Operations in Base Ten: Three-digit place value (hundreds, tens, ones), counting within 1000, skip-counting by 5s, 10s, and 100s, reading and writing numbers to 1000 in multiple forms, comparing three-digit numbers, and fluent addition and subtraction strategies including adding and subtracting within 1000.
- Measurement and Data: Measuring length with appropriate tools, estimating in inches, feet, centimeters, and meters, comparing lengths, solving word problems involving lengths, number lines, telling time to the nearest five minutes, money word problems, and reading and creating picture graphs and bar graphs.
- Geometry: Recognizing and drawing shapes with specified attributes, partitioning rectangles into equal squares, and partitioning circles and rectangles into equal shares.
