2nd Grade Math in Minnesota

Minnesota 2nd graders follow the Minnesota Academic Standards Math, which cover number operations, place value, measurement, data, and geometry. StudyPug organizes every standard into clear video lessons so students can follow along with what their class is doing — or get ahead.

Addition and Subtraction

A big focus in 2nd grade is adding and subtracting fluently. Students work with numbers up to 20 using mental strategies, solve one- and two-step word problems within 100, and extend to addition and subtraction within 1000 using place value strategies and concrete models.

  • Add and subtract within 20 using mental math
  • Solve word problems with addition and subtraction within 100
  • Add up to four two-digit numbers
  • Add and subtract within 1000 using models and drawings
  • Mentally add or subtract 10 or 100 from any number between 100 and 900

Place Value

2nd graders learn that three-digit numbers are made of hundreds, tens, and ones. They read, write, and compare three-digit numbers using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. They also count within 1000 and skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s.

Measurement and Data

Students measure lengths using inches, feet, centimeters, and meters. They estimate lengths, compare objects to find how much longer one is than another, and solve word problems involving lengths. They also tell time to the nearest five minutes and solve problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies.

  • Select appropriate measurement tools for the job
  • Measure the same object with two different units and compare results
  • Use number lines to represent whole numbers as lengths
  • Read analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes
  • Generate and display data in picture graphs and bar graphs

Geometry

In geometry, 2nd graders recognize and draw shapes with specific attributes. They partition rectangles into rows and columns of equal squares and partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares — an important foundation for fractions in later grades.
