Michigan 2nd Grade Math: What Students Learn

Michigan 2nd grade math covers a wide range of foundational topics that prepare students for more advanced math in later grades. All topics follow the Michigan Mathematics Standards for Grade 2.

Addition and Subtraction

Students practice adding and subtracting within 20 using mental strategies, and within 100 using place value strategies. They also learn to solve one- and two-step word problems involving addition and subtraction within 100, including problems about lengths.

  • Fluent addition and subtraction within 20
  • Adding up to four two-digit numbers
  • Adding and subtracting within 1000 using models and drawings
  • Mentally adding or subtracting 10 or 100 from numbers between 100 and 900

Place Value and Number Sense

2nd graders learn that three-digit numbers are made of hundreds, tens, and ones. They read and write numbers to 1000 in standard form, word form, and expanded form, and compare three-digit numbers using symbols.

  • Understanding hundreds, tens, and ones
  • Counting within 1000 and skip-counting by 5s, 10s, and 100s
  • Reading and writing numbers to 1000
  • Comparing three-digit numbers

Measurement and Data

Students measure objects using appropriate tools, estimate lengths in inches, feet, centimeters, and meters, and solve word problems involving lengths. They also learn to tell time to the nearest five minutes and work with coins and dollar bills.

  • Selecting and using appropriate measurement tools
  • Measuring the same object with two different units
  • Telling time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes
  • Solving word problems with coins and dollar bills
  • Drawing picture graphs and bar graphs

Geometry and Early Fractions

Students recognize and draw shapes with specific attributes, partition rectangles into equal squares, and divide circles and rectangles into equal shares — an early introduction to fractions.

  • Drawing shapes with specified attributes
  • Partitioning rectangles into rows and columns of same-size squares
  • Dividing circles and rectangles into halves, thirds, and fourths
