About 8th Grade Maryland math
Maryland follows the Maryland College Career Ready Standards, which organize 8th grade math into five major areas: the number system (rational and irrational numbers, integer exponents, and scientific notation), expressions and equations (slope, linear equations, and systems), functions (defining, comparing, and modeling linear and nonlinear functions), geometry (transformations, congruence, similarity, and the Pythagorean Theorem), and statistics and probability (scatter plots and two-way tables). Maryland 8th Grade Math Topics
- The Number System: Understanding rational and irrational numbers, decimal expansions, square roots, cube roots, integer exponents, and scientific notation including operations and estimation with very large and very small quantities.
- Expressions and Equations: Graphing proportional relationships and interpreting slope, deriving linear equations using similar triangles, solving linear equations in one variable, and analyzing and solving systems of simultaneous linear equations.
- Functions: Defining functions and their graphs, comparing functions represented algebraically and graphically, interpreting linear functions in the form y = mx + b, constructing functions to model linear relationships, and describing functional relationships qualitatively from graphs.
- Geometry: Verifying properties of rotations, reflections, and translations; understanding congruence and similarity through sequences of transformations; using coordinates to describe transformations; applying angle relationships in triangles and with parallel lines; and proving and applying the Pythagorean Theorem in two and three dimensions.
- Statistics and Probability: Constructing and interpreting scatter plots for bivariate data, fitting linear models to data, using linear equations to solve problems in context, and analyzing two-way tables for patterns of association between categorical variables.
