2nd Grade Math Topics Covered

Maryland 2nd grade math covers a wide range of foundational skills. Students work on addition and subtraction within 100 and 1000, develop strong place value understanding, and begin exploring measurement and data. Every topic on StudyPug aligns to what Maryland schools teach under the Maryland College Career Ready Standards.

Addition and Subtraction

2nd graders learn to solve one- and two-step word problems using addition and subtraction within 100. They build fluency with mental math strategies and extend their skills to add and subtract within 1000 using models and drawings. Students also practice mentally adding or subtracting 10 or 100 from any number between 100 and 900.

Place Value

Understanding place value is a major focus in 2nd grade. Students learn that a three-digit number represents hundreds, tens, and ones. They count within 1000, skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s, and read and write numbers in standard form, word form, and expanded form. Comparing three-digit numbers using place value concepts is also covered.

Measurement and Data

Maryland 2nd graders measure lengths using inches, feet, centimeters, and meters. They estimate lengths, compare objects, and solve word problems involving measurement. Students also tell time to the nearest five minutes, solve money problems with coins and bills, and create picture graphs and bar graphs to represent data.

Geometry

In geometry, students recognize and draw shapes with specific attributes. They partition rectangles into equal rows and columns and count the total squares. Students also divide circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, building early fraction understanding.

  • Addition and subtraction within 20, 100, and 1000
  • Place value with hundreds, tens, and ones
