2nd Grade Math in Louisiana

Louisiana 2nd grade math covers a wide range of skills that set students up for success in 3rd grade and beyond. Under the Louisiana Student Standards Math, students in Grade 2 develop fluency with addition and subtraction, explore place value up to 1000, and begin working with measurement, data, time, and money. StudyPug provides video lessons and practice problems for every one of these topics.

Addition and Subtraction

2nd graders in Louisiana work on adding and subtracting within 100 and 1000. They solve one- and two-step word problems, add up to four two-digit numbers, and use mental math strategies to add or subtract 10 or 100 from any number. StudyPug breaks each strategy into clear, short video lessons so students can master one skill at a time.

Place Value Up to 1000

Understanding hundreds, tens, and ones is a core 2nd grade skill. Students learn to read and write numbers up to 1000 in standard form, word form, and expanded form. They also compare three-digit numbers and skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s. These skills directly prepare students for 3rd grade multiplication and larger number operations.

Measurement and Data

Louisiana 2nd graders measure objects using inches, feet, centimeters, and meters. They estimate lengths, compare lengths between two objects, and use addition and subtraction to solve measurement word problems. Students also learn to represent whole numbers on a number line and collect and display data using picture graphs and bar graphs.

Time and Money

Telling time to the nearest five minutes and solving word problems with coins and dollar bills are key 2nd grade skills. StudyPug covers analog and digital clocks, as well as quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, with worked examples your child can follow at their own pace.

Geometry

2nd grade geometry introduces students to recognizing and drawing shapes with specific attributes, partitioning rectangles into equal rows and columns, and dividing circles and rectangles into equal shares. These concepts build early fraction understanding that grows in 3rd grade.

  • Add and subtract within 20 with mental math fluency
  • Understand odd and even numbers up to 20
  • Use rectangular arrays to build early multiplication concepts
  • Read and write numbers to 1000 in multiple forms
  • Measure, estimate, and compare lengths using standard units
  • Tell time and solve money word problems
  • Partition shapes into equal shares as an introduction to fractions

StudyPug's 2nd grade math content is fully aligned to Louisiana Student Standards Math, so every lesson your child watches directly supports what they are learning in their Louisiana classroom.
