8th Grade ELA in Kentucky

Kentucky 8th graders are expected to read complex literary and informational texts, write well-structured arguments, and demonstrate strong grammar and language skills. All of this falls under the Kentucky Academic Standards for ELA, which guide what teachers cover in classrooms across the state.

Reading Skills Covered

Students analyze how authors develop themes, central ideas, and characters across literary and informational texts. They also practice drawing evidence from texts to support written responses — a skill tested on the Kentucky Student Assessment (KSA).

  • Literary analysis and theme development
  • Informational text comprehension and central idea
  • Author's purpose, point of view, and argument
  • Citing textual evidence in responses

Writing Skills Covered

8th grade writing focuses on argument, informational, and narrative forms. Students learn how to plan, draft, revise, and edit their work, with an emphasis on supporting claims with evidence.

  • Argumentative essay structure and evidence use
  • Informational and explanatory writing
  • Research and source evaluation
  • Narrative writing techniques

Language and Grammar

Grammar instruction at this level covers verb moods, active and passive voice, punctuation, and vocabulary development through context clues and word relationships.
