Every topic on this page aligns to Kansas Mathematics Standards.

Addition and Subtraction

2nd graders in Kansas learn to fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies, and solve one- and two-step word problems using addition and subtraction within 100. They also add up to four two-digit numbers and work with problems involving lengths.

Place Value and Number Sense

Students understand that three-digit numbers represent hundreds, tens, and ones. They count within 1000, skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s, read and write numbers to 1000 in expanded form, and compare three-digit numbers using place value understanding.

Measurement and Data

Kansas 2nd graders measure lengths using inches, feet, centimeters, and meters, estimate lengths, and determine how much longer one object is than another. They represent data using picture graphs and bar graphs with up to four categories.

Time and Money

Students tell and write time to the nearest five minutes using analog and digital clocks. They solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies.

Geometry

2nd graders recognize and draw shapes with specific attributes, partition rectangles into rows and columns of equal squares, and partition circles and rectangles into equal shares — halves, thirds, and fourths.
