Indiana 4th Grade Math: What Students Learn

Indiana 4th grade math covers a wide range of topics aligned to the Indiana Academic Standards for Math. Students build on what they learned in 3rd grade and develop stronger skills in multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and geometry. StudyPug provides video lessons and practice for every one of these standards.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking

Students learn to interpret multiplication equations as comparisons and solve word problems involving multiplicative comparisons. They work through multistep word problems using all four operations, find factor pairs for whole numbers up to 100, and generate number and shape patterns that follow given rules.

Number and Operations in Base Ten

4th graders explore place value in multi-digit whole numbers, understanding that each digit represents ten times the value of the digit to its right. They read, write, and round multi-digit whole numbers, and fluently add and subtract using the standard algorithm. Multiplication of up to four-digit numbers and division with up to four-digit dividends are also introduced.

Fractions and Decimals

Students develop a deep understanding of fractions — including equivalent fractions, comparing fractions with different numerators and denominators, and adding fractions with the same denominator. They extend this to multiplying fractions by whole numbers. Decimals are introduced through fractions with denominators of 10 and 100, and students compare decimals to the hundredths place.

Measurement and Data

  • Relative sizes of measurement units within a system
  • Solving word problems involving distance, time, volume, mass, and money
  • Area and perimeter formulas for rectangles
  • Line plots with fractional measurements

Geometry

Students learn to draw and identify points, lines, line segments, rays, and angles. They classify two-dimensional figures by their properties — including parallel and perpendicular lines and angle types. Students also explore lines of symmetry and measure angles using a protractor.

ILEARN Test Preparation

Indiana 4th graders are assessed through the ILEARN test. StudyPug's lessons and practice problems cover every Indiana Academic Standards for Math topic included in the 4th grade assessment, helping students feel prepared and confident on test day.
