Illinois 6th Grade Math: What Students Learn This Year

6th grade is a major turning point in math. Illinois students move beyond whole number arithmetic into new territory — ratios, negative numbers, algebraic thinking, and data analysis. Every topic in this course aligns to the Illinois Learning Standards for Math and prepares students for the IAR assessment and 7th grade pre-algebra.

Ratios, Rates, and Proportional Reasoning

Students begin by understanding ratios and unit rates — describing relationships between two quantities using ratio language and solving real-world problems with rate reasoning. These skills appear throughout middle school math and science.

The Number System

6th graders extend their number sense to include fractions divided by fractions, multi-digit decimal operations, greatest common factor, least common multiple, and — for the first time — negative numbers. Understanding integers and rational numbers on a number line is a foundational skill for algebra.

Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities

Algebraic thinking takes center stage in 6th grade. Students write and evaluate numerical expressions with exponents, use variables to represent quantities, apply properties of operations, and solve one-step equations and inequalities. They also explore dependent and independent variables in real-world contexts.

Geometry

Students find the area of triangles, quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing and decomposing shapes. They calculate the volume of rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths, plot polygons on coordinate planes, and use nets to find surface area of 3D figures.

Statistics and Probability

6th graders are introduced to statistical thinking — identifying statistical questions, understanding data distributions, calculating measures of center (mean, median, mode) and measures of variation, and displaying data in dot plots, histograms, and box plots.
