Illinois 2nd Grade Math: What Your Child Will Learn

In 2nd grade, Illinois students make a big leap in math. They move from simple addition and subtraction to working with numbers up to 1000. They learn about place value, measurement, money, and how to read clocks. All of this is covered under the Illinois Learning Standards for Math.

Addition and Subtraction in 2nd Grade

A big focus of 2nd grade math is building fluency with addition and subtraction. Students work on:

  • Adding and subtracting within 20 using mental strategies
  • Solving one- and two-step word problems within 100
  • Adding up to four two-digit numbers
  • Adding and subtracting within 1000 using models and drawings
  • Mentally adding or subtracting 10 or 100 from any number between 100 and 900

Place Value with Three-Digit Numbers

2nd graders learn that every three-digit number has hundreds, tens, and ones. They practice reading and writing numbers up to 1000 in multiple forms — standard form, word form, and expanded form. They also learn to compare three-digit numbers using greater than, less than, and equal to.

Measurement, Time, and Money

Illinois 2nd graders measure lengths using inches, feet, centimeters, and meters. They estimate lengths, compare objects, and solve word problems involving measurement. Students also learn to:

  • Tell and write time to the nearest five minutes on analog and digital clocks
  • Solve word problems using dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies
  • Represent whole numbers as lengths on a number line

Data and Geometry

Students collect measurement data, draw picture graphs, and create bar graphs with up to four categories. In geometry, they recognize and draw shapes by their attributes, partition rectangles into equal squares, and divide circles and rectangles into equal shares — an early introduction to fractions.
