About 5th Grade Idaho math
Idaho follows the Idaho Content Standards for Mathematics, organized around number sense, operations, fractions, measurement, data, and geometry. In 5th grade, students work with numerical expressions and patterns, place value and decimals, multi-digit multiplication and division, fractions with unlike denominators, volume, the coordinate plane, and two-dimensional figure classification. - Numerical Expressions and Patterns: Writing and evaluating expressions with parentheses, brackets, and braces; generating patterns from rules and graphing ordered pairs on a coordinate plane.
- Place Value and Decimals: Understanding place value relationships, powers of 10, reading and writing decimals to thousandths, and rounding decimals to any place.
- Whole Number Operations: Fluently multiplying multi-digit whole numbers and finding whole-number quotients with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors.
- Decimal Operations: Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals to hundredths using place value strategies and properties of operations.
- Fractions: Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, multiplying fractions and mixed numbers, interpreting fractions as division, and dividing unit fractions by whole numbers.
- Measurement and Data: Converting measurement units within a system and representing fractional measurement data on line plots.
- Volume: Understanding volume as an attribute of solid figures, measuring with unit cubes, and solving real-world volume problems using multiplication and addition.
- Coordinate Plane: Defining a coordinate system with perpendicular axes and graphing points in the first quadrant to represent real-world situations.
- Geometry: Classifying two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on their properties.
