Idaho 2nd Grade Math: What Students Learn This Year

Idaho 2nd grade math covers a wide range of foundational skills that students will build on throughout elementary school. Aligned to the Idaho Content Standards Math, the 2nd grade curriculum moves students from basic number sense into more complex addition, subtraction, place value, measurement, and geometry concepts.

Addition and Subtraction

Students practice adding and subtracting within 100 and within 1000, including solving one- and two-step word problems. They develop fluency with mental math strategies and learn to add up to four two-digit numbers. These skills form the backbone of 2nd grade math and prepare students for multiplication in 3rd grade.

Place Value to 1000

A major focus of 2nd grade is understanding three-digit numbers. Students learn that each digit represents hundreds, tens, and ones. They read and write numbers to 1000 in different forms — base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form — and compare three-digit numbers using greater than and less than.

  • Skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s up to 1000
  • Mentally add or subtract 10 or 100 from any number between 100 and 900
  • Compare numbers using place value understanding

Measurement and Data

Students measure lengths using appropriate tools and units, including inches, feet, centimeters, and meters. They estimate lengths, compare object lengths, and solve word problems involving measurement. Data skills include generating measurement data, drawing picture graphs, and drawing bar graphs with up to four categories.

Time and Money

Idaho 2nd graders learn to tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes. They also solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies — practical math skills used every day.

Geometry

Students recognize and draw shapes with specific attributes, partition rectangles into rows and columns of equal squares, and divide circles and rectangles into equal shares (halves, thirds, and fourths). These geometry concepts lay the groundwork for understanding fractions in later grades.
