Iowa 3rd Grade Math: What Students Learn

Iowa 3rd grade math is where students make a major leap — from adding and subtracting to multiplying and dividing. The Iowa Core Math Standards for 3rd grade are organized around several key areas that build the foundation for all future math learning.

  • Multiplication and Division: Students learn to interpret products and quotients of whole numbers, solve word problems, and fluently multiply and divide within 100.
  • Fractions: Students understand fractions as numbers, place them on a number line, and compare fractions by reasoning about size.
  • Place Value and Operations: Students round to the nearest 10 or 100, add and subtract within 1,000, and multiply one-digit numbers by multiples of 10.
  • Measurement and Data: Students tell time to the nearest minute, measure liquid volumes and masses, and draw scaled picture graphs and bar graphs.
  • Geometry and Area: Students recognize area, measure it by counting unit squares, and relate area to multiplication and addition.
