Iowa 2nd Grade Math: What Students Learn
Iowa 2nd graders cover a wide range of math skills aligned to the Iowa Core Math Standards. From adding and subtracting within 1000 to telling time and counting money, these topics build the foundation students need for 3rd grade math and beyond.
Addition and Subtraction
Students practice addition and subtraction within 100 using word problems and mental strategies. They also work with numbers up to 1000, adding and subtracting using place value and concrete models. Key skills include mentally adding or subtracting 10 or 100 from any number between 100 and 900.
Place Value and Number Sense
2nd graders learn that three-digit numbers represent hundreds, tens, and ones. They read, write, and compare numbers up to 1000 using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. Students also skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s within 1000.
Measurement and Data
Students measure lengths using inches, feet, centimeters, and meters. They estimate lengths, compare objects, and solve word problems involving measurement. Reading analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes and solving money word problems with coins and bills are also covered.
- Measure objects using appropriate tools
- Estimate and compare lengths in different units
- Tell time to the nearest five minutes
- Solve word problems with dollars, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies
- Draw picture graphs and bar graphs with up to four categories
Geometry
Students recognize and draw shapes with specific attributes. They partition rectangles into equal rows and columns, and divide circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares — an early introduction to fractions.
