2nd Grade Math Topics in Washington DC

Washington DC 2nd graders cover a wide range of math skills across number sense, operations, measurement, and geometry. StudyPug organizes every topic into clear, easy-to-follow video lessons so students can find exactly what they need.

Addition and Subtraction

2nd grade math puts a strong focus on addition and subtraction. Students learn to solve one- and two-step word problems within 100, fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies, and work with up to four two-digit numbers at once. These skills build the number sense students need for 3rd grade multiplication.

Place Value and Number Sense

Students explore three-digit numbers by breaking them into hundreds, tens, and ones. They learn to read and write numbers up to 1000, compare three-digit numbers, skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s, and mentally add or subtract 10 or 100 from any number between 100 and 900.

Measurement and Data

2nd graders measure lengths using inches, feet, centimeters, and meters. They estimate lengths, compare objects, solve word problems involving length, and represent numbers on a number line. Students also read and create picture graphs and bar graphs to interpret data.

Time and Money

Students learn to tell and write time to the nearest five minutes using analog and digital clocks. They solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies — practical skills used every day.

Geometry

2nd grade geometry introduces students to shapes with specific attributes, partitioning rectangles into equal-sized squares, and dividing circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares — an early foundation for fractions.
