About Kindergarten Connecticut math
Connecticut follows the Connecticut Core Standards, which organize kindergarten math into four main areas: counting and cardinality, operations in base ten, measurement and data, and geometry. Students build skills in counting to 100, comparing numbers, solving addition and subtraction problems within 10, describing measurable attributes, and analyzing two- and three-dimensional shapes. Connecticut Kindergarten Math Topics
- Counting and Cardinality: Count to 100 by ones and tens, count forward from a given number, write numerals 0-20, connect counting to cardinality, and answer 'how many?' questions for up to 20 objects.
- Comparing Numbers: Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to another group, and compare two written numerals between 1 and 10.
- Operations and Algebraic Thinking: Represent addition and subtraction in multiple ways, solve word problems within 10, decompose numbers into pairs, find the number that makes 10, and fluently add and subtract within 5.
- Number and Operations in Base Ten: Compose and decompose numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some further ones.
- Measurement and Data: Describe measurable attributes such as length or weight, directly compare two objects, and classify and count objects by category.
- Geometry: Name and describe shapes in the environment, identify two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, analyze and compare shapes, and compose simple shapes to form larger ones.
