2nd Grade Math Topics in Colorado
Colorado's 2nd grade math curriculum covers a wide range of foundational skills that students will build on throughout elementary school. From adding and subtracting within 100 to understanding place value up to 1000, every topic is designed to strengthen number sense and problem-solving skills.
Addition and Subtraction
2nd graders in Colorado learn to fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies, and extend that skill to solving one- and two-step word problems within 100. They also practice adding up to four two-digit numbers and working with numbers up to 1000 using models and drawings.
Place Value
Understanding that a three-digit number represents hundreds, tens, and ones is a key 2nd grade skill. Students learn to read, write, and compare three-digit numbers, and practice mentally adding or subtracting 10 or 100 from any number between 100 and 900.
Measurement and Data
Colorado 2nd graders measure lengths using inches, feet, centimeters, and meters. They estimate lengths, compare objects, and solve word problems involving length. Students also tell time to the nearest five minutes and work with money using dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies.
- Measure objects using appropriate tools
- Estimate and compare lengths in different units
- Tell time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes
- Solve word problems involving coins and dollar bills
Geometry
Students recognize and draw shapes based on their attributes. They also partition rectangles into equal-sized squares and divide circles and rectangles into equal shares — building early understanding of fractions.
