Arizona 6th Grade Math: Topics and Standards
6th grade math in Arizona is organized around six major areas: ratios and proportional relationships, the number system, expressions and equations, geometry, and statistics and probability. Each area aligns to the Arizona Mathematics Standards, which guide what students are expected to know and be able to do by the end of the year.
Ratios and Rates
Students learn to describe ratio relationships between two quantities and connect ratios to real-world contexts. They explore unit rates, use ratio and rate reasoning to solve problems, and apply these skills to percent, measurement conversions, and graphing on the coordinate plane.
The Number System
6th graders extend their understanding of numbers to include negative integers and rational numbers. They locate rational numbers on a number line, compare and order them using absolute value, and graph points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane. They also build fluency with multi-digit division and decimal operations.
Expressions and Equations
Students write and evaluate numerical expressions with whole-number exponents, use variables to represent numbers, and apply properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions. They solve one-step equations of the form x + p = q and px = q, write inequalities, and analyze relationships between dependent and independent variables.
Geometry
6th grade geometry covers finding the area of triangles, quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing and decomposing shapes. Students find the volume of rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths, draw polygons on the coordinate plane, and use nets to find the surface area of three-dimensional figures.
Statistics and Probability
Students learn to recognize statistical questions, describe data distributions by their center, spread, and shape, and display data using dot plots, histograms, and box plots. They summarize numerical data sets and interpret measures of center and variation in context.
