Arkansas 2nd Grade Math Topics
Arkansas 2nd grade math covers a wide range of skills that build the foundation for future math success. Aligned to Arkansas Mathematics Standards, the 2nd grade curriculum focuses on number sense, operations, measurement, data, and geometry.
Addition and Subtraction
Students in 2nd grade practice adding and subtracting within 100 and 1000. They solve one- and two-step word problems, develop mental math strategies, and learn to add up to four two-digit numbers. These skills build fluency that carries into 3rd grade multiplication.
Place Value
Understanding hundreds, tens, and ones is a major focus of 2nd grade math. Students read and write numbers to 1000, compare three-digit numbers, and practice skip-counting by 5s, 10s, and 100s. Place value concepts support every other area of math at this level.
Measurement and Data
2nd graders measure objects using inches, feet, centimeters, and meters. They estimate lengths, compare measurements, and use addition and subtraction to solve length word problems. Students also learn to tell time to the nearest five minutes and solve problems involving coins and dollar bills.
- Measure objects with appropriate tools
- Estimate lengths in standard units
- Tell time from analog and digital clocks
- Solve money word problems with coins and bills
- Create picture graphs and bar graphs
Geometry
Students recognize and draw shapes with specified attributes, partition rectangles into rows and columns of equal squares, and divide circles and rectangles into equal shares. These concepts introduce early fraction ideas in a hands-on way.
