About 8th Grade Alabama math

Alabama 8th grade math follows the Alabama Course of Study Math, covering five core strands: the Number System (rational and irrational numbers, scientific notation, integer exponents), Expressions and Equations (linear equations, slope, systems), Functions (linear and nonlinear), Geometry (transformations, similarity, congruence, Pythagorean Theorem, volume), and Statistics and Probability (scatter plots, two-way tables). StudyPug provides video lessons and practice problems aligned to every strand.

Alabama 8th Grade Math Topics

  • The Number System: Understanding rational and irrational numbers, decimal expansions, integer exponents, square roots, cube roots, and scientific notation including operations with very large and very small quantities.
  • Expressions and Equations: Graphing proportional relationships and interpreting slope, using similar triangles to derive linear equations, solving linear equations in one variable, and analyzing systems of simultaneous linear equations.
  • Functions: Defining functions and their graphs, comparing functions represented in different forms, interpreting linear functions of the form y = mx + b, modeling linear relationships, and analyzing graphs qualitatively.
  • Geometry: Properties of rotations, reflections, translations, and dilations; congruence and similarity of two-dimensional figures; angle relationships in triangles and with parallel lines; the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse; distance in a coordinate system; and volumes of cones, cylinders, and spheres.
  • Statistics and Probability: Constructing and interpreting scatter plots, fitting linear models to data, using equations of linear models to solve problems, and reading two-way tables for bivariate categorical data.
