4th Grade Math Topics in Alabama
Alabama 4th grade math covers a wide range of topics aligned to the Alabama Course of Study Math standards. Students work through multiplication and division, multi-digit whole number operations, fractions, decimals, measurement, data, and geometry. StudyPug breaks every one of these topics into short, clear video lessons followed by practice problems.
Multiplication and Division
4th graders in Alabama learn to interpret multiplication equations as comparisons and solve word problems involving multiplicative comparison. Students also practice multiplying up to four-digit numbers by a one-digit number and multiplying two two-digit numbers. Division with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors — including remainders — is also covered.
Fractions and Decimals
Fraction concepts expand significantly in 4th grade. Alabama students learn why fractions are equivalent, how to compare fractions with different numerators and denominators, and how to add fractions as sums of unit fractions. They also begin multiplying fractions by whole numbers and connect fractions with denominators of 10 and 100 to decimal notation.
- Equivalent fractions using multiplication
- Comparing fractions with unlike numerators and denominators
- Understanding fractions as sums of unit fractions
- Multiplying a fraction by a whole number
- Expressing fractions as decimals to the hundredths
- Comparing decimals to the hundredths place
Place Value and Multi-Digit Operations
Alabama 4th graders explore how digits in a multi-digit number represent ten times the value of the digit to their right. They read, write, and round multi-digit whole numbers and practice adding and subtracting fluently using the standard algorithm.
Measurement and Data
Students solve word problems involving distances, time intervals, liquid volumes, masses, and money using all four operations. They apply area and perimeter formulas for rectangles and create line plots to display measurement data in fractions of a unit.
Geometry and Angles
4th grade geometry introduces points, lines, line segments, rays, and angles. Alabama students learn to measure angles in whole-number degrees using a protractor, recognize angle measure as additive, and classify two-dimensional figures by their parallel or perpendicular lines and angle types. Students also identify lines of symmetry in two-dimensional figures.
Preparing for the ACAP Assessment
Alabama students in 4th grade take the ACAP (Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program) assessment in math. StudyPug covers every Alabama Course of Study Math standard tested at this grade level, so students can review topics, fill gaps, and feel ready on test day.
