Alaska 6th Grade Math Topics
6th grade math in Alaska covers a wide range of topics aligned to the Alaska Mathematics Standards. Students move from whole-number operations into more complex concepts including ratios, negative numbers, and introductory algebra. Here is what your child will study this year.
Ratios, Rates, and Proportional Reasoning
Students learn to describe relationships between two quantities using ratio language and unit rates. They apply ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world problems, including problems involving percentages and measurement conversions.
Number Systems
6th graders extend their understanding of numbers to include fractions divided by fractions, multi-digit decimal operations, and positive and negative integers. They learn to locate rational numbers on a number line and in all four quadrants of a coordinate plane, and they practice finding absolute value and ordering rational numbers.
Expressions and Equations
Students write and evaluate numerical expressions with whole-number exponents, use variables to represent unknown quantities, and apply properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions. They solve one-step equations and inequalities of the form x + p = q and px = q, and they begin exploring dependent and independent variables in real-world contexts.
Geometry
6th grade geometry focuses on finding the area of triangles, quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing and decomposing shapes. Students also find the volume of rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths, use the coordinate plane to find side lengths of polygons, and represent three-dimensional figures using nets to calculate surface area.
Statistics and Data
Students are introduced to statistical thinking, learning to identify statistical questions, describe data distributions by center and spread, and display data in dot plots, histograms, and box plots. They summarize data sets by calculating mean, median, mode, and range in context.
