Saskatchewan Grade 8 English Curriculum Overview
Grade 8 English in Saskatchewan covers a wide range of literacy skills. Students learn to read and respond to a variety of texts — including print, visual, oral, and multimedia — while exploring themes of identity, social responsibility, and efficacy. They develop the ability to analyze characters, identify mood and technique in texts, and make thoughtful connections between new ideas and their own experiences.
Reading and Comprehension Skills
Saskatchewan Grade 8 students apply before, during, and after reading strategies to deepen understanding. They learn to summarize, paraphrase, make inferences, and evaluate the credibility of sources. Students also build fluency, working toward reading targets of 140–180 words per minute orally and 180–230 words per minute silently.
