Grade 7 Science in Ontario
Ontario Grade 7 science introduces students to four broad areas: life systems, matter and energy, structures and mechanisms, and Earth and space systems. These topics lay the foundation for high school science and connect to real-world observations students make every day.
Life Systems
Students explore how living things are organized at the cellular level. Topics include cell structure, cell functions, and how systems of cells work together in plants and animals. Understanding life systems helps students connect biology concepts they will revisit throughout high school.
Matter and Energy
Grade 7 students learn about pure substances and mixtures, including how to separate them. They study physical and chemical properties of matter and how energy is involved in changes to matter. This unit builds directly on Grade 6 work with properties of materials.
Structures and Mechanisms
This unit focuses on form and function in structures, including how forces act on objects and how structural design responds to those forces. Students examine real-world examples of strong and stable structures and apply scientific thinking to engineering challenges.
Earth and Space Systems
Students study heat in the environment, including how the sun transfers heat to Earth and how heat moves through the atmosphere and oceans. This unit connects to climate, weather patterns, and environmental science topics explored in later grades.
