About Grade 1 Nova Scotia English
Nova Scotia follows the Nova Scotia Curriculum for English, organized around oral communication, reading and writing foundational skills, and text comprehension and composition. In Grade 1, students develop phonemic awareness and phonics to decode and spell words, build reading fluency in short texts, compose simple sentences, and identify text forms and organizational structures. - Phonological and Phonemic Awareness: Isolating, blending, and segmenting words orally and applying phonemic knowledge when reading and spelling.
- Foundational Reading Skills: Letter formation and alphabetic knowledge, grapheme-phoneme correspondences, phonics and phonemic blending to read and spell words, and developing orthographic knowledge.
- Vocabulary and Morphology: Explicitly taught vocabulary in various contexts, including subject-specific words, and applying morphological knowledge to understand new words.
- Reading Fluency and Comprehension: Reading simple words, sentences, and short paragraphs with accuracy and appropriate pacing; making predictions, monitoring comprehension, making connections, identifying main ideas, and making inferences.
- Writing and Composition: Composing simple and compound sentences, applying capitalization and punctuation, identifying parts of speech, drafting and editing texts of various forms, and presenting final texts to audiences.
- Text Forms and Media: Identifying narrative and informational text forms, organizational structures, visual elements, and simple elements of style.
