Grade 2 Math Topics in New Brunswick

New Brunswick Grade 2 math covers a wide range of foundational skills. Students learn to count by 2s, 5s, and 10s both forward and backward, and explore even and odd numbers. Place value is introduced up to hundreds, and students work with numbers concretely, pictorially, and symbolically. Estimation, comparing numbers, and understanding equality and inequality are key skills at this level.

Addition and Subtraction in Grade 2

Grade 2 students in New Brunswick develop personal strategies for addition and subtraction. They use doubles, making 10, and one more or less to solve problems. Students also learn that adding or subtracting zero does not change the original number, and they begin to understand the relationship between addition and subtraction.

Patterns in Grade 2 Math

Patterns are a big part of Grade 2 math. Students describe, extend, compare, and create patterns using manipulatives, diagrams, sounds, and actions. They work with both repeating and increasing patterns to build early algebraic thinking.

Measurement and Geometry

Grade 2 students explore measurement using non-standard units to compare length, height, distance, and mass. They learn that changing an object's position does not change its measurements. In geometry, students identify and sort 2-D shapes and 3-D objects — including triangles, squares, rectangles, circles, cubes, spheres, cones, cylinders, and pyramids — and recognize 2-D shapes found in 3-D objects in the environment.

Data and Graphing

Students collect information to answer questions and use graphs to solve problems. This introduces early data literacy skills that carry through to higher grade levels.
