Grade 4 English in New Brunswick

New Brunswick Grade 4 English covers a wide range of literacy skills. Students develop their ability to read different text types, write with descriptive language, communicate ideas clearly, and listen actively. These skills build on Grade 3 and prepare students for more complex work in Grade 5.

Reading and Comprehension

Grade 4 students in New Brunswick practise responding to both literal and inferential questions. They make predictions, summarize story elements, identify text features like headings and diagrams, and explore figurative language. Building vocabulary through Tier Two and Tier Three words is a key part of reading at this level.

Writing Skills

Writing in Grade 4 covers descriptive language, complete sentences, paragraphing, and different sentence types. Students learn to use punctuation correctly — including commas, apostrophes, and quotation marks — and practise spelling strategies using prefixes, suffixes, and root words. Drafting, revising, and publishing with technology are also introduced.

Speaking and Listening

Oral communication skills include giving and following multi-step instructions, taking turns in conversation, asking questions, and responding to presentations. Students also begin to use language suited to different audiences and situations.
