Manitoba Grade 4 Science Curriculum Overview
Grade 4 science in Manitoba introduces students to four main areas of study: life systems, matter and materials, energy, and Earth and space science. These topics are designed to build curiosity and foundational scientific thinking that students will carry into higher grades.
Life Systems
Students explore how living things are organized, how they grow, and how they interact with their environments. This includes looking at habitats, food chains, and the needs of plants and animals in Manitoba ecosystems.
Matter and Materials
Grade 4 students investigate the properties of materials and how they can be changed. They learn to sort and classify materials based on observable properties such as texture, hardness, and flexibility.
Energy
This unit covers light and sound as forms of energy. Students discover how light travels, how shadows are formed, and how sound is produced and travels through different materials.
Earth and Space Science
Students examine Earth's features and how they change over time, including weathering, erosion, and the role of water in shaping landscapes. This builds on Grade 3 concepts about soil and rocks.
