BC Grade 1 Math Topics

Counting and Number Sense
Grade 1 students learn to count on and count back, skip-count by 2s and 5s, and sequence numbers to 20. They compare and order numbers and explore benchmarks of 10 and 20. These early number skills are the building blocks for all future math.
Addition and Subtraction
Students decompose numbers to 10 and 20, explore mental math strategies, and develop an understanding of addition and subtraction as operations. They record equations symbolically and practise equality and inequality.
Patterns and Algebra
Grade 1 math introduces sorting rules, translating patterns, letter coding, and predicting elements in a pattern. Students also practise verbally describing a change in quantity, laying the groundwork for algebraic thinking.
Measurement and Geometry
Students use a baseline for comparison, explore multiple copies of a unit, iterate a single unit, and tile an area. They sort objects using one attribute, compare shapes and objects in the environment, and describe positions.
Data and Probability
Grade 1 students create, describe, and compare concrete graphs. They use probability language such as never, sometimes, always, more likely, and less likely to describe everyday events.
Financial Literacy
Students identify coin values, count multiples of the same denomination, and role-play simple transactions. This gives Grade 1 students an early introduction to money and real-world math.
