About OSSLT Writing
The OSSLT writing section asks for short answers and longer pieces, including a news report and an opinion piece with supporting detail. The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) runs Ontario's provincial assessments.
StudyPug's OSSLT Writing course covers 8 chapters and 14 topics, with 245 practice questions and 8 video lessons. Every topic is scored as you work, so the next lesson is chosen from what you got wrong rather than from a fixed order.
Topics covered
The course follows the same ground the EQAO assessment covers:
- Developing a Main Idea
- Organizing Ideas
- Using Writing Conventions
- Opinion Essay — Main Idea

How to study for OSSLT Writing
Every OSSLT writing task is scored against a fixed set of expectations, so the lessons practise the shape of each task before the wording. Start with the diagnostic, work the chapters it flags, then use the practice questions until the score stops moving.
OSSLT Writing — FAQ
We've got answers to some popular questions.
Do I need a subscription to practice OSSLT Writing?
You can create an account and start working OSSLT Writing practice questions with step-by-step solutions right away. A StudyPug plan opens the certified-teacher video lessons, full diagnostics, mock exams and study plans for StudyPug's OSSLT coverage.
What does OSSLT Writing actually test?
OSSLT Writing asks you to complete a news report and an opinion/persuasive piece, testing organization, development, and writing conventions. StudyPug covers it in the topic groups shown on this page.
How is OSSLT Writing scored?
The OSSLT (Reading and Writing together) is scored as successful or not-yet-successful, not on a numeric scale. A successful result is required to earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, unless you complete the alternative literacy course.
Is the OSSLT the same as the EQAO Grade 3, 6, or 9 assessments?
No — the Grade 3, 6, and 9 assessments are reported on a Level 1–4 scale and aren't required for graduation. The OSSLT is a separate literacy test, usually taken in Grade 10, that you must pass (or complete an alternative for) to graduate.
