What are EQAO and OSSLT?
The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) administers Ontario's provincial assessments: Grade 3 and Grade 6 tests in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics, the Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics, and the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT).
The Grade 3, 6, and 9 assessments are not pass/fail — results are reported on a Level 1–4 scale, with Level 3 representing the provincial standard. The OSSLT is different: it's a graduation requirement, and students must demonstrate a successful result (or complete the alternative literacy course) to earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
Key Facts About EQAO & OSSLT
- EQAO assessments: Grade 3 (Math, Reading, Writing), Grade 6 (Math, Reading, Writing), and Grade 9 Math
- OSSLT: a literacy graduation requirement, typically taken in Grade 10
- EQAO results are reported on a Level 1–4 scale — not pass/fail
- OSSLT is scored as successful or not-yet-successful, and is required for graduation
- Administered at no cost through Ontario publicly funded schools
EQAO & OSSLT FAQ
We've got answers to some popular questions.
What is EQAO?
EQAO (Education Quality and Accountability Office) is the Ontario body that administers provincial assessments: Grade 3 and Grade 6 tests in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics, and the Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics. It also administers the OSSLT, a separate literacy graduation requirement.
How are EQAO assessments scored?
Grade 3, Grade 6, and Grade 9 results are reported on a Level 1–4 scale, not pass/fail. Level 3 represents the provincial standard for that grade. Schools and boards use these results to understand how students and programs are performing, not to hold individual students back.
What is the OSSLT, and do I need to pass it?
The OSSLT (Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test) is a literacy assessment required to earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Unlike the Grade 3/6/9 assessments, it's scored as successful or not-yet-successful, and students who don't succeed can retake it or complete an alternative literacy course.
How much do EQAO and OSSLT cost?
Both are administered at no cost through Ontario's publicly funded school system as part of the regular school program.
Can I retake the OSSLT if I don't succeed?
Yes — students who don't achieve a successful result can retake the OSSLT in a later administration, or complete the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OSSLC) as an alternative way to meet the graduation requirement. Grade 3, 6, and 9 EQAO assessments aren't retaken the same way, since they aren't pass/fail.
What is the difference between StudyPug pricing plans?
StudyPug offers three plans: Monthly (C$25.00/mo), 6-Month (C$13.17/mo billed as C$79), and Annual (C$9.92/mo billed as C$119). All plans include coverage across every EQAO grade and the OSSLT, step-by-step video lessons, adaptive practice, diagnostic assessments, and progress tracking.
