About OSSLT Reading
The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test is a graduation requirement, and its reading section uses news reports, informational passages and graphic texts. The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) runs Ontario's provincial assessments.
StudyPug's OSSLT Reading course covers 8 chapters and 19 topics, with 325 practice questions and 16 video lessons. Every topic is scored as you work, so the next lesson is chosen from what you got wrong rather than from a fixed order.
Topics covered
The course follows the same ground the EQAO assessment covers:
- Understanding Explicitly Stated Information
- Understanding Implicitly Stated Information — Local Inferences
- Understanding Implicitly Stated Information — Global Inferences
- Making Connections
- Real-Life Narrative
- Information Paragraph
- News Report
- Dialogue
How to study for OSSLT Reading
OSSLT reading is a timed reading task more than a literature test, so the practice here is built around finding evidence quickly. Start with the diagnostic, work the chapters it flags, then use the practice questions until the score stops moving.
OSSLT Reading — FAQ
We've got answers to some popular questions.
Do I need a subscription to practice OSSLT Reading?
You can create an account and start working OSSLT Reading practice questions with step-by-step solutions right away. A StudyPug plan opens the certified-teacher video lessons, full diagnostics, mock exams and study plans for StudyPug's OSSLT coverage.
What does OSSLT Reading actually test?
OSSLT Reading measures whether you can understand and use everyday reading materials — forms, schedules, articles, and instructions. StudyPug covers it in the topic groups shown on this page.
How is OSSLT Reading scored?
The OSSLT (Reading and Writing together) is scored as successful or not-yet-successful, not on a numeric scale. A successful result is required to earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, unless you complete the alternative literacy course.
Is the OSSLT the same as the EQAO Grade 3, 6, or 9 assessments?
No — the Grade 3, 6, and 9 assessments are reported on a Level 1–4 scale and aren't required for graduation. The OSSLT is a separate literacy test, usually taken in Grade 10, that you must pass (or complete an alternative for) to graduate.
