About EQAO Grade 9 Math
The Grade 9 mathematics assessment follows the de-streamed MTH1W course, so every Ontario student writes the same assessment. The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) runs Ontario's provincial assessments.
StudyPug's EQAO Grade 9 Math course covers 16 chapters and 49 topics, with 470 practice questions and 332 video lessons. Every topic is scored as you work, so the next lesson is chosen from what you got wrong rather than from a fixed order.
Topics covered
The course follows the same ground the EQAO assessment covers:
- Development and Use of Numbers
- Number Sets
- Powers
- Rational Numbers
- Applications
- Development and Use of Algebra
- Algebraic Expressions and Equations
- Coding
- Application of Linear and Non-Linear Relations
- Characteristics of Linear and Non-Linear Relations
How to study for EQAO Grade 9 Math
MTH1W moves quickly from number sense to algebraic modelling, and the study path follows that order rather than jumping between strands. Start with the diagnostic, work the chapters it flags, then use the practice questions until the score stops moving.

What does Grade 9 Math actually test?
The EQAO Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics covers number sense and algebra, linear relations, measurement and geometry, and graphing and data. StudyPug covers it in the topic groups shown on this page.
How is Grade 9 Math scored?
There's no pass or fail. Results are reported on a Level 1–4 scale, with Level 3 representing the provincial standard for Grade 9. Since 2021, all Grade 9 students take the same assessment, taken during class time as part of their math course.
Is the Grade 9 assessment the same as the OSSLT?
No — the OSSLT is a separate literacy test, typically taken in Grade 10, that's required for graduation and scored as successful or not-yet-successful. The Grade 9 Math assessment is a single math assessment taken during your Grade 9 math course, reported on a Level 1–4 scale, and it isn't a graduation requirement.
