Explore the Sky: Day, Night, Sun, Moon, and Stars!
You will learn about the sun, moon, and stars in the sky, and discover how the sky changes from day to night.
What Do You See in the Sky?
Look up at the sky! You can see many amazing things up there. The sky looks different during the day and at night.
During the day, you see a bright blue sky. At night, you see a dark sky full of glowing lights.

The Sun and the Daytime Sky
During the day, the sky is bright and blue. You can see clouds floating slowly across the blue sky. Clouds are made of tiny water drops high above the ground.
The sun gives us light during the day. This bright light helps plants grow. Because the sky is so bright during the day, you cannot see stars but they are still up in space!
Stars in the Night Sky
At night, the sky gets dark. You can see tiny twinkling lights called stars. Stars are very far away in space, so they look small to you.
Stars twinkle and shine brightly against the dark sky. When morning comes, the sky gets bright again and the stars fade away. They are still there you just cannot see them anymore!
The Moon at Night
You can also see the moon at night! The moon is a round, glowing object in the dark sky. It is much bigger and brighter than the stars you see.
The moon changes its shape, or phase, as the month goes by. Sometimes it looks like a big full circle. Other times it looks like a curved crescent shape, like a banana or a smile in the sky!
Why Does the Sky Change?
The sky changes from day to night because Earth rotates, or spins. When your part of Earth faces away from the sun, it gets dark that is nighttime! When your part faces the sun, it gets bright that is daytime.
As Earth rotates, stars seem to move slowly across the night sky from east to west. It looks like the stars are moving, but it is really Earth that is turning!
Special Things in the Night Sky
Stars form special patterns in the sky called constellations. People have looked at these star patterns for thousands of years and named them after animals and objects they look like.
Sometimes you might see a bright streak of light zoom across the sky at night. This is called a meteor, or a shooting star. A meteor is a space rock that makes a bright streak when it enters Earth's sky.
Key Terms and Definitions
Star: A star is a tiny twinkling light you can see in the night sky. Stars are very far away in space. They look small, but they are actually very big and bright!
Moon: The moon is a round, glowing object you can see in the night sky. It orbits, or travels around, Earth. The moon reflects light and looks big and bright to you.
Moon Phase: A moon phase is the shape the moon looks like from Earth. Sometimes it looks like a full circle. Other times it looks like a crescent, or curved shape. The moon changes its phase as the month goes by.
Crescent: A crescent is a curved shape, like a banana or a smile. The moon looks like a crescent during certain times of the month when you can only see part of it lit up.
Constellation: A constellation is a special pattern that stars make in the night sky. People named these patterns after animals and objects they look like. You can look for these star patterns on a clear night!
Meteor: A meteor is a space rock that makes a bright streak of light when it enters Earth's sky. People sometimes call it a shooting star. You might see one zoom across the night sky!
Earth Rotation: Earth rotation means Earth spins around, like a top. This spinning is what makes day and night happen. When your part of Earth faces the sun, it is day. When it faces away, it is night.
Cloud: A cloud is a large white object that floats in the sky during the day. Clouds are made of tiny water drops that form together high above the ground. You can watch them move slowly across the blue sky.
Fun Ways to Learn About the Sky
You can go outside at night and look up at the dark sky. Try to count the stars you see twinkling! Can you spot the moon? What shape does it look like tonight?
During the day, look up at the blue sky and find the clouds. Watch them move slowly. Remember the stars are still up there, but you cannot see them because the sky is too bright!
