Look Up! Learn About Clear, Cloudy, and Partly Cloudy Skies

You will learn to look at the sky and tell if it is clear, cloudy, or partly cloudy by looking at the clouds.

What Is Cloud Cover?

You can look up at the sky every day! The sky can look different depending on how many clouds you see. This is called cloud cover.

When you look at the sky, you can describe it in three ways: clear, cloudy, or partly cloudy.

A Clear Sky

A clear sky has no clouds at all. You can see only blue sky above you. The sun shines bright on a clear day!

When you look up and see all blue with zero clouds, the sky is clear. You can see the whole blue sky without anything blocking it.

A Cloudy Sky

A cloudy sky is covered with clouds. You cannot see much blue sky at all. The clouds are gray or white and fill up the whole sky.

On a cloudy day, the sky looks gray. You cannot see the blue sky because the clouds are covering everything. Cloudy skies can happen before it rains or snows!

A Partly Cloudy Sky

A partly cloudy sky has some clouds and some blue sky. You can see both white clouds and blue patches at the same time.

This means clouds cover only part of the sky. It is not all blue and not all gray. You see a mix of clouds and blue sky together!

Key Terms and Definitions

Cloud Cover: Cloud cover means how much of the sky is covered by clouds. You look up to see if there are a few clouds, many clouds, or no clouds at all.
