Watch the Sky Change: Daily Sun Patterns

You will learn how the sky and shadows change throughout the day as light moves from morning to evening.

How the Sky Changes Every Day

Every day, you can watch the sky change from light to dark. In the morning, the sky gets brighter. At night, the sky gets dark again.

This happens because Earth spins around every 24 hours. This spinning creates a pattern of daytime and nighttime that repeats every single day!

You can be a sky watcher just like Olivia, William, and Sofia! Look outside at different times of day and notice how the sky looks different each time.

Where Does Light Come From Each Day?

In the morning, light first appears from the east. You can watch the eastern sky get brighter when you wake up.

As the day goes on, the light moves across the sky. By afternoon, the light comes from the west side of the sky.

At midday, the light is directly above you. This is when the sky is the brightest all day long!

How Shadows Change Throughout the Day

Shadows are fun to watch! When you go outside in the morning, your shadow is very long. This is because the light is low in the sky and comes from the side.

At noon, your shadow is very short. The light is high above you, so it shines straight down.

In the afternoon, your shadow gets long again. Just like Liam, Mia, and Piper noticed, shadows move from west to east as the day goes on.

Sky Colors During the Day

During the day, you can look up and see a blue sky. This happens because of how light travels through the air around Earth.

In the evening, the sky often turns orange. This happens because the light travels through more air when it is low on the horizon. It makes beautiful colors you can see from your window!

At night, the sky gets dark and you can see stars. Stars are always in space, but you can only see them when it is dark outside.

Key Terms & Definitions

Daytime: Daytime is when your part of Earth faces the light. The sky is bright and you can see everything around you.

Nighttime: Nighttime is when your part of Earth faces away from the light. The sky is dark and you can see stars.

Shadow: A shadow is a dark shape made when something blocks the light. Your body makes a shadow when you stand in the light.

Midday (Noon): Midday is the middle of the day. The light is highest in the sky and brightest at this time, and your shadow is shortest.

Morning: Morning is the beginning of the day. The sky gets lighter and light comes from the east. Your shadow is long in the morning.

Evening: Evening is the end of the day. The sky gets darker and the light is low in the west. Your shadow gets long again.

East: East is a direction. Light first appears from the east every morning when the day begins.

West: West is the opposite direction from east. In the afternoon, the light is in the western sky.

Daily Pattern: A daily pattern is something that happens the same way every day. The sky getting light then dark is a daily pattern that repeats every 24 hours.

Earth's Rotation: Earth's rotation means Earth spins around slowly. This spinning is why we have daytime and nighttime every day.

Try These Sky-Watching Activities!

You can be a scientist and watch the sky! Go outside in the morning and look at your shadow. Is it long or short?

Check your shadow again at lunchtime. What do you notice? Try again in the afternoon. You will see your shadow change just like Daniel and Marco did!

You can also watch the sky colors change. Look at the sky in the morning, at noon, and in the evening. Notice how the brightness changes from dim to bright to dim again, just like Elijah observed.

What You Already Know

You already know that daytime is bright and nighttime is dark. Now you are learning why this happens and how the light moves across the sky each day.

You also know that shadows appear when light is blocked. Now you can understand why your shadow changes size and direction throughout the day!
