Grade 5 English in Prince Edward Island
Grade 5 English in PEI develops the skills students need to communicate clearly and think critically. The curriculum covers four main areas: speaking and listening, reading and viewing, writing and representing, and research. Each area builds on what students learned in Grade 4 and prepares them for the more demanding work ahead in Grade 6.
Speaking and Listening
In Grade 5, PEI students practise contributing ideas to group discussions, asking questions to clarify understanding, and listening carefully to others. They learn to support their own opinions with evidence, recognise bias and stereotyping in oral language, and use word choice that fits the situation and audience.
Reading and Viewing
Grade 5 readers in PEI explore a wide variety of texts, including fiction, non-fiction, and media. Students use context clues, text features, and structural analysis to understand what they read. They also learn to question and analyse information, recognise an author's point of view, and identify when language is being used to persuade or manipulate.
Writing and Representing
Writing in Grade 5 covers imaginative, informational, and persuasive forms. Students draft, revise, and edit their work, making deliberate language choices for specific audiences and purposes. They practise spelling conventions, correct syntax, and use references like dictionaries and thesauri while editing.
Research Skills
Grade 5 students in PEI learn to gather information from three or more sources, use classification systems and reference materials, and record notes using outlines, charts, and diagrams. These skills support independent inquiry and help students answer their own questions with evidence from a range of texts.
