Word problems involving rates, work, and combined tasks often translate directly into equations with algebraic fractions.

The key setup step is writing each quantity as a fraction, such as work rate as 1 divided by time, before combining them into one equation.

Once the equation is set up, clear the denominators, solve the resulting equation, and always check for extraneous or physically impossible solutions.

Work problems and distance-rate-time problems are the two most common categories of rational equation applications.

A solution that gives a negative time, negative speed, or a value that makes a denominator zero must be rejected in context.
