Ontario Grade 11 Mathematics for Work and Everyday Life (MEL3E)
Grade 11 MEL3E is designed for Ontario students following the Workplace Preparation pathway. The course focuses on practical math skills used in everyday life and the workplace, including understanding paycheques, managing personal finances, making smart purchasing decisions, and planning for vehicle ownership and travel.
Earnings and Payroll
Students learn how total earnings are calculated across different occupations and remuneration methods, including hourly wages, salaries, and commission. MEL3E also covers government payroll deductions such as income tax, CPP, and EI, helping students understand the difference between gross pay and net pay.
Purchasing and Personal Finance
This section of the course covers making smart purchasing decisions — from estimating sale prices and calculating sales tax to comparing unit prices and understanding credit card and debit card costs. Students also explore simple interest and compound interest, savings options from financial institutions, and how credit ratings affect borrowing.
Vehicle Ownership and Travel
- Understanding the costs of buying, leasing, and insuring a vehicle in Ontario
- Calculating fixed and variable costs of owning and operating a vehicle
- Using maps and scales to plan road trips and estimate travel costs
- Comparing transportation options including car, airplane, train, and bus
