An arithmetic series is what you get when you add up the terms of an arithmetic sequence, one with a constant common difference.
The sum formula is S_n equals n over 2 times the quantity first term plus last term, or equivalently n over 2 times 2a plus n minus 1 times d.
The formula comes from pairing the first and last terms, the second and second-last, and so on, since every pair adds to the same total.
To use the formula you need three pieces of information: the first term, the common difference or last term, and the number of terms.
Arithmetic series problems often hide the number of terms inside a word problem, so finding n is usually the first real step.
