Surface area is the total area of every face on a 3D shape's outside, measured by unfolding the shape into a flat net.
What You'll Learn
Surface area is the total area of all the faces on the outside of a 3D shape.
It is measured in square units, the same as flat-shape area.
A net is a 3D shape unfolded flat; a cube's net is six equal squares.
Surface area is the sum of the areas of every face in the net.
Surface area (outside covering) is different from volume (space inside).
