Arithmetic Sequences and the Nth Term Formula

Understand what makes a sequence arithmetic, learn the common difference and nth term formula, and practice finding any term in the sequence.

What You'll Learn

An arithmetic sequence is an ordered list of numbers where each term is found by adding the same fixed value, the common difference, to the term before it.
The common difference, usually written as d, can be found by subtracting any term from the one that follows it.
The nth term formula a sub n equals a sub 1 plus (n minus 1) times d lets you jump straight to any term without listing every number in between.
A recursive rule, a sub n equals a sub (n minus 1) plus d, describes the same pattern but only in terms of the previous term.
Arithmetic sequences differ from geometric sequences, which grow by a constant ratio instead of a constant difference.

What You'll Practice

1

Finding common differences and specific terms using the sequence formula

2

Solving for unknown term positions given term values

3

Using systems of equations to find T1 and d from two known terms

4

Working with algebraic expressions in consecutive arithmetic terms

Why This Matters

Arithmetic sequences appear everywhere in real life, from calculating loan payments to predicting patterns in data. This foundational skill prepares you for advanced algebra, calculus, and practical applications in finance, computer science, and engineering.
