14.3 Volume of cylinders

Volume of a Cylinder

The volume of a cylinder equals pi times its radius squared times its height.

What You'll Learn

Volume of a cylinder: V = pi times radius squared times height.
Square the radius first, then multiply by pi and by the height.
The formula uses the radius, not the diameter.
If given the diameter, divide by 2 to get the radius first.
Volume (space inside) differs from surface area (the outside covering).

What You'll Practice

1

Finding volume from cylinder nets with given radius and height

2

Calculating volume when diameter is given instead of radius

3

Comparing volumes of two cylinders with different dimensions

4

Solving for the length of a cylinder given its volume and diameter

Why This Matters

Understanding cylinder volume is essential for real-world applications like calculating water pipe capacity, storage tank sizes, and container volumes. You'll use this skill in physics, engineering, and everyday problem-solving involving cylindrical objects.
