BC Grade 9 Science Topics
Grade 9 science in British Columbia spans four main areas: matter and atoms, chemical reactions, electricity, and life science. Each unit builds on concepts from Grade 8 and sets students up for success in Grade 10 Science.
Matter and Atoms
Students explore the structure of atoms, the periodic table, and how elements combine to form compounds. Understanding atomic structure is foundational for all chemistry work in later grades.
Chemical Reactions
This unit covers how substances interact, how to write and balance chemical equations, and the difference between physical and chemical changes. Students practice identifying reactants and products in everyday reactions.
Electricity
Grade 9 students learn about static and current electricity, circuits, voltage, resistance, and Ohm's Law. These concepts connect directly to real-world technology and physics in higher grades.
Biology: Reproduction and Evolution
The life science unit introduces sexual and asexual reproduction, DNA basics, and the theory of evolution. Students examine how traits are passed between generations and how species change over time.
